Decompiled maps are not perfect recreations, because of format differences. This makes them useful for learning, measurement, and inspection, but not direct recompilation. The original source is ideal for reproductions or modifications. On March 24, 2017, an unknown individual leaked the original map files for the Half-Life 2 episodes. These uncompiled source files show us the different development stages of the games. For today's article, we examined these files and wrote a description for each map. VMEX - a HL2 map decompiler. VMEX is a simple map decompiler for Half-Life 2 Source engine maps (i.e., for HL2, HL2DM, CS:S, and DoD:S). It converts compiled .bsp map files into .vmf files which can be loaded into Hammer.
